Generative AI in Search: Let Google Handle the Searching for You

With enhanced AI Overviews, improved planning tools, and AI-organized search results, Google’s custom Gemini model is revolutionizing the search experience by making it smarter and more intuitive.

For over 25 years, Google Search has continuously evolved to meet the needs of users during countless technological shifts. Our mission remains the same: to provide the best possible information with lightning speed. Over the years, we’ve perfected our information quality systems and built a massive knowledge base filled with billions of facts about people, places, and things. All of this work ensures you get trusted, reliable results in an instant.

Now, with the introduction of generative AI, Google Search can do even more than before. Whether you’re researching, planning, or brainstorming, Google can handle the legwork for you, all powered by our new, custom Gemini model. This model combines advanced capabilities, like multi-step reasoning and multimodal processing, with our industry-leading search technologies to deliver next-level results.

Get Quick Answers with AI Overviews

When you need fast answers but don’t have time to sift through tons of information, AI Overviews can provide the solution. Users in Search Labs have already tested AI Overviews billions of times, and they’ve found them to be a helpful way to get a quick summary on a topic while also accessing links for more detailed information.

We’re excited to announce that AI Overviews are now rolling out to users across the U.S., with global expansion coming soon. By the end of this year, we expect over a billion people worldwide to have access to these overviews. Not only are they perfect for quick insights, but users are also visiting a more diverse range of websites thanks to these AI-generated summaries. Additionally, links within AI Overviews receive more engagement compared to traditional search listings, ensuring valuable traffic continues flowing to publishers.

As we scale this feature, we’re committed to clearly distinguishing between organic and sponsored results, so ads will continue to be easily identifiable throughout the search experience.

Tackle Complex Questions with Ease

The multi-step reasoning capability of our Gemini model allows AI Overviews to handle even the most complex inquiries. Instead of breaking your question into multiple searches, you can now ask it all in one go, including any specific details or requirements you have in mind.

For instance, if you’re searching for a yoga or pilates studio, and you need one that’s popular with locals, close to your commute, and offers new-member discounts, you can simply ask, “Find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston with intro offers and walking times from Beacon Hill.” Our AI will do the work for you, saving time and providing tailored results. This feature is coming soon to English queries in Search Labs in the U.S.

Plan with Confidence

Beyond answering complex questions, Google Search now helps you plan ahead. With built-in planning capabilities, you can easily create personalized plans for things like meals or vacations directly in Search.

For example, if you search “create a 3-day meal plan that’s easy to prepare,” Search will give you a customized plan with recipe suggestions from across the web. Want to make adjustments? Simply ask to swap a meal for something else, like a vegetarian dish, and Search will update your plan on the spot. You can even export it to Google Docs or Gmail for convenience.

Currently, meal and trip planning features are available in English in the U.S. via Search Labs, with expanded categories, like parties and workouts, coming later this year.

Discover New Ideas with AI-Organized Search Pages

When you’re searching for inspiration, whether it’s for dining, movies, or books, exploring all the options can be overwhelming. Soon, Search will generate an AI-organized results page to help you brainstorm by neatly categorizing results under AI-generated headlines, making it easier to explore fresh ideas.

This feature will roll out soon in the U.S. for English queries, starting with dining and recipes, and expanding to other categories like hotels, shopping, and music.

Get Help with Video Search

Search isn’t just about text — often, your questions involve things you see or experience in the real world. With advancements in video understanding, Google is taking visual search to the next level by allowing users to search with videos.

For instance, imagine you bought a record player from a thrift shop, but something’s off with how the needle moves. Instead of struggling to describe the issue in words, you can submit a video, and Search will provide an AI Overview with troubleshooting tips. This innovative video search feature will soon be available in Search Labs for U.S. users, with plans to expand to more regions.

This is just the beginning of how Google is transforming Search with the help of the Gemini model’s advanced AI capabilities. Soon, Google will not only help you search but also streamline your tasks — from simplifying research to brainstorming and beyond.
